usualchatter replied to your post: Fartlek
Sometimes I’ll do fartlek using telephone poles or city blocks as my markers. I find its easier to keep track of those than constantly looking at my watch. Plus there’s a visible endpoint.
I’ll do that sometimes, but the watch enables me to be more exact like if I want to know I’m running hard twice as much as I’m running easy. If I do...
Fartlek
Fartlek is swedish for “speed play.”
My plan was to go to the track and do an 800m workout, but the track times are little iffy, so I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it. I head on over anyway, and it turns out there is a women’s lacrosse game! UGHHHH. I was little annoyed for no good reason, so I decided to just do a fartlek on this 4.5 milish route. The route is on...

Nature is Beauty
Sitting lazily at my computer on my desk, I watch a video of a snitch in real life Quidditch walking across a ledge on a building. He tactfully climbed up the building at some point so that any seeker would have trouble catching him. Outside my dorm, the weather is in the low 60s and the sun is blazin’. Due to the slow internet, the youtube video had trouble buffering. On a whim, I close my...

A Bike and a Hike
We pedaled furiously while the wind threatened to sweep us away. The gusts assaulted us, using its force to push our bikes off kilter. However, we stood strong, pushing on our handlebars in order to attempt to stay straight. I loved it. I loved the challenge the wind provided. I loved the competition. And I loved the fact that I loved something many would not enjoy.
The 80s, bikers’...
Barefoot Running Study at my school!
fkjhsdflahjsdfg I AM SO EXCITE!
Ok, so I saw a flyer on a bulletin board advertising a film showing of a documentary about North Korea. There is this club called LINK that is all about raising awareness about N.K., and I really wanna see that. I’ve seen a few docus on it, and it interests me to no end.
THEN I saw a flyer asking for participants in a study about barefoot and minimalist...

A little barefootin'
Connor and I met at his dorm to embark on a midnight, barefoot run. I gifted him my Luna Sandals that I just never got into on his birthday - February 14th.
The night was warm, as it recently has been, warming up the ground to allow me to more comfortably strike my naked feet. I did most of the talking, informing him about barefoot running since he told me a friend of his was against it. I felt...

The New York Times has a really cool article today called “How exercise fuels the brain.” I highly recommend you read the full thing yourself, but here are a few excerpts with random bolded phrases:
For many years, scientists had believed that the brain, which is a very hungry organ,…

Finally! A Run!
Welllll, my 10:10 class for M/W/F for this week was cancelled since my professor’s wife had a baby, so I took that time today to go on a run. This route is always pretty killer since it is so damn hilly. But I’m really glad I was finally able to get my lazy ass out the door.
Also, it was like 50˚ and sunny, so SUPER NICE
Just watched Heavy: Season 1: Episode 1
Which is a show that documents obese people losing weight.
And now I find myself on my yoga mat, shirtless, and doing abs and pushups.
Oregon Track Club Tempo →
Been a while since I’ve posted one of these! Here is a tempo workout from last spring by the Oregon Track Club (OTC)! It’s got crazy good runners like Chris Thompson, Sally Kipyego, Nick Symmonds, and others.
P.S. Veronika, you’ll eat this shit up. Nick is pretty funny and cool. No shirtlessness though…unfortunately.
I’m no great runner, by any means. I’m at an ordinary—or perhaps more like...

Generic title: My First Marathon More accurate subtitle: From here it can only get better, right? My first impression of Texas was, “Does that guy really have a legit, old-fashioned, wood-handled, revolver strapped to his hip??” And the answer, holding true to the Texas stereotype, was yes….

I have been so tired lately.
I had a crazy weekend in which I got hardly any sleep, so I’ve just been tired and not really feeling any exercising recently. But I should be fine after tonight, so I will definitely start running again. I have been so lazy, and I think my body needs it.
I AM IMPATIENT.

Fewer things more annoying that waiting for my Garmin to locate. I swear, it sometimes even goes backwards! Anyone else have this issue? Am I just doing it all wrong?
Roselyn goes backwards allll the time. I just turn her off and on until she submits. It’s 10x worse in the cold too because you aren’t even warmed up. But, you could do a little warm-up while the...

Reach Out Climb 2012
So yesterday, February 18 was Reach Out Climb - JMU’s biggest climbing competition. We hold 2 a year, Boulder Jam in the Fall and Reach Out in the Spring. Boulder Jam is mainly only open to JMU people, but Reach Out is available to anyone and everyone. Usually, climbing teams/clubs from William and Mary and UVA (Virginia colleges) come and compete. This is somewhat unfortunate because they...

Road Biking V-card
So at 3:15, I met with my friend Emma to walk to her house to go biking. Emma took me to the ultra with her, along with her boyfriend Nat and Adam. I got closer to all of them, and Nat said I could use his road bike and shoes to go riding with Emma sometime. Nat is an AWESOME guy, and it’s really cool he was so open to letting me ride his bike. He said he doesn’t really ride it much...

Sluggish
I went for my first legit run since the ultra last Saturday. I started out, and it was like 55˚F and sunny out so it was soooooo NICE! As I got running, I kinda felt a little sluggish. I had my debit with me, so I decided to do a quick stop at a gas station to get some gatorade. I went in, got some lemon lime gatorade and some Reeses cups (minimum debit purchase was $2.00 so I HAD to).
I also...

Aight, enough rest.
I’m ready to get back into it :)
soul-runner asked: It's the bottom of it & not the achilles, & a little lower like the back of the heel. I'm striking around the ball of my foot & don't bring my heels down. But about a week ago I started getting really bad pain there. When I strike on my toes pain shoots through my heel. It's so odd. I tried looking things up & I think I might have Bursitis but I'm not sure....

Anonymous asked: weird weird weird. Random question of the day! How are you different from your high school self
soul-runner asked: Hey! Congrats on your ultra :) I'm really proud of you & it sounds like it was an awesome experience. Any idea when you'll run your next? & I wanted to ask if you had any pain in your heels when you started using your vibrams/merrells because I'm about ten steps from cutting my right one off lol
findingthinagain replied to your post: No Memory For Pain
I agree with this. Women say that they forget what childbirth really feels like.
Ahhhh, that makes sense. How else would women have multiple children when it’s the greatest pain they’ve ever felt? This explains how my mother had 6 children.
What Makes Your Muscles Sore? →

This is my first blog post for Fit Campus! Tell me what you think!
I’m sure everyone knows the painful feeling of muscle soreness that appears a day or two after hard exercise, also known as delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The symptoms include strength loss, pain, muscle tenderness, swelling, and stiffness, but do you know what actually causes DOMS?

No Memory For Pain
I have a theory. I believe that the human brain cannot remember the exact feeling of pain.
When I think back to my race, I remember that it hurt. It hurt a lot. When I walk down the stairs, it hurts again because of this soreness. However, I can not remember exactly what that pain felt like. If I felt it again, I would know it’s the same. But right now in this moment, I would not be able to...

Holiday Lake 50k++: Part 2
As soon as the race starts, people start hootin’ and hollerin’. I add in my own, “Whoooooo!” The cluster gradually starts running and moving past the starting line. Adam and I started together, and he was not planning to start slow. It was a good strategy, because it gets pretty increasingly difficult to pass people on trails. The first 3/4 of a mile was uphill on a wide...
