vagabond-ing-deactivated2012020 asked: I actually didn't work them in gradually, like you're supposed to - I got them for Christmas and I've worn them on every run since! I know that probably wasn't a good idea but my other shoes were pretty old and falling apart, so I just wanted to use them as soon as possible. Thankfully, I haven't had any problems, though!

I asked about diet because mine is...

vagabond-ing-deactivated2012020 asked: How long is your long run tomorrow? Mine's 8 miles, I'm so excited!

I've made a switch to more minimalist shoes (Nike Free's) and they definitely have helped. I had recurring shin injuries since last year and my shins have barely bothered me at all since I've been running in the Frees. Hopefully you can make the transition as well!

Also,...

Beginner's running questions
Hey! I just recently started running for fun as a part of my new year’s resolution to stay active. I still don’t really know how much my body can take since I can give up as soon as after two miles or last as long as an hour non-stop (does any of that mumbo jumbo make sense?). I just wanted a little advice on where to start with running, such as how much to run in a day. Sorry for...

boogie-man-deactivated20120409 asked: Hey Matthew, I just saw your post with the Barefoot vs. non-barefoot picture you posted about am hour ago. \When I was trying to sway my dad into letting me get Vibrams (He was whole heartedly against it), I did loads of research to try to convince him, and one of the things I found was that when running in a Heel-to-toe manner, all of your forward momentum stops, and all the impact goes straight...

dan-cq asked: Hey Matthew, what do you think about Vibrams?
I heard they're shoes that helps with strengthening arches and simulates barefoot running, but what's your take? I saw some at REI and I've been somewhat interested.

Tattoo
So here’s my plan: I think I want to get a naked man (no body parts, just like abs and stuff) running after a deer or antelope (forefoot striking). This represents how running assisted in the evolution of man. Like, this is basically why we are who we are: upright, nachal ligament, all that stuff. It also represents how humans need to run in order to survive. Basically this is how humans would...

Practice was cancelled...because of rain.
Yeah, my school/county is really stupid. I might just take the day off to do strength and whatnot and ice.

Gimp squad!
Alright, so I have just been running with GARRETT (with two Ts) every day once all the distance guys go off for their warm-up. I’ve hardly even associated with Coach W, and it feels AMAZING. Garrett and I have just been going in the back trails and what not (staying on soft surface). My shins don’t feel 100%, but its better the next day if I ice after practice. Well, hopefully this...

Just a normal day.
Did 20 minutes with my friend Garret. We got in over 2.5 miles, so it’s an ok start. As the run went on, my legs felt pretty good (not 100%, but whatevs). So I’m just gonna keep running and icing and hope everything turns out well. Unfortunately, I can’t run in tomorrow’s race, but I’ll get my chance. After that I stretched, then Garret and I did SUPER LEGS! One set...

i use regular running shoes, and i want to get flats but im scared like they seem so thin and during cross country there are some courses with lots of rocks.

Cycling is actually pretty cool.
I just went about 9.5 miles on the bike. It was actually enjoyable. Before this ride, I never really understood how to get fatigued on the bike. All that would happen was quad soreness. Well, it of course makes sense that in order to get super fatigues on the bike, you have to have really strong quad (and hamstring) muscles! Unfortunately, I don’t have enough strength there in order to go...

HOLY CRAP!!
To qualify for districts, I need to run a 10:37 3200m. …I ran a 10:42 in a time trial in practice before Footlocker. runningwhere replied to your post: The plan: Did you ever get/try the foam roller? No, I never did. I’m so lazy. I don’t really want to buy one because they’re about $30 and I don’t think I get injured that much. If this does persist (cross my fingers it doesn’t), I’m definitely going to look into buying one.

The plan:
When I got home, I stretched and did my strength then iced. Tonight I’m inns do the same. Tomorrow I’m going bike for like half an hour to an hour. Then I’ll do my strength and stretches and icing when I get back and before bed. Then Friday, I’m going to try to run. In my view, I’ve been taking good care of it, so we will see.

The thing about being injured...
You really, really, really want to run and race, but you can’t. You really really want to get better, but it’s really hard to motivate yourself to do stuff like icing, stretching, and strength.

To whoever (the anon) who just wrote in my ask...
I’m incredibly sorry, but I can’t answer that on this blog, due to the fact that there are many people that I know in real life that follow this, since it’s not really a personal blog. However, I would really like to answer it. So if you e-mail me at bigmanning123@gmail.com, I promise to answer with complete honesty.
